'Human spirit' or 'spiritual human'?

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience."
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
“The greatest missionary is the Bible in the mother tongue. It never needs a furlough, and is never considered a foreigner.”  Cameron Townsend, Founder Wycliffe Bible Translator

Liberty

"It will be found an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a man of his natural liberty upon the supposition he may abuse it."   George Washington

A burden for souls!

"I care not where I go or how I live or what I endure so that I may save souls. When I sleep I dream of them; when I awake they are first in my thoughts...no amount of scholastic attainment, or able and profound exposition, of brilliant and stirring eloquence can atone for the absence of a deep, impassioned, sympathetic love for human souls." - David Brainerd

"Send me to the nearest place to the bottomless pit." – Gipsy Smith

"You must go into the fire if you are going to pull others out of it, and you will have to dive into the floods if you are going to draw others out of the water. You cannot work a fire escape without feeling the scorch of the conflagration, nor man a lifeboat without being covered with the waves." – Charles Spurgeon

Karl Barth

Came across this guy's writings through school.
  • "Jesus does not give recipes that show the way to God as other teachers of religion do. He is Himself the way."
  • "The best theology would need no advocates: it would prove itself."
  • "Belief cannot argue with unbelief, it can only preach to it.

Socrates & Plato on Revelation of God

"Oh that someone would arise, man or god to show us God."
~ Socrates (5th Century B.C)

"Unless a god-man comes to us and reveals to us the Supreme Being, there is no help or hope. The world will never be set right until the perfect man arises who will be persecuted, buffeted, and tied to a stake and so bring a new righteousness."
~ Plato (4th Century B.C.)

"Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!"
John 1:2

God stoops to our weakness

"...For who is so devoid of intellect as not to understand that God, in so speaking, lisps with us as nurses are wont to do with little children? Such modes of expression, therefore, do not so much express what kind of a being God is, as accommodate the knowledge of him to our feebleness. In doing so, he must, of course, stoop far below his proper height."
~ John Calvin's Institutes I.13.1

Einstein

"Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler." ~ Einstein

Diversity

‘If everybody in the room is the same you’ll get a lot fewer arguments and a lot worse answers.’

Ivan Seidenberg, CEO, Bell Atlantic

Great Minds - Eleanor Roosevelt

"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." - Eleanor Roosevelt

"Earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can."

"Earn all you can, save all you can, give all you can." John Wesley

Capitalism reflects the Biblical pattern of personal responsibility and reward. Ministering to the poor and loving your neighbor reflect the Biblical pattern of concern for inequalities. While these are defining principles of extremely polarized social and political views, they are found in unity in the Bible.

I just finished a sociology course which I thoroughly enjoyed. After much reflection I believe that Wesley's statement is balanced Biblically and also very applicable to life. May we continue to search to realize the patterns that God communicates to us in His Word.

Revolution

"...revolutions of ages do not oft recover the loss of a rejected truth, for the want of which whole nations fare the worse."
~Isocrates, a Greek orator a famous speech at Areopagus

Not to a creed, but to Christ

"It is the genius of the gospel that it is extremely personal. It centers in a Savior, not a system; in a Master, not a message; and calls me, not to a creed, but to Christ. ~ Howard Crago
